The National Money Night Talk organized by The American Express team in collaboration with personal finance expert Jean Chatzky, is due to be held on September 16th 2010 and is aimed at encouraging families all over America to talk about money and their financial responsibility and hence increase awareness about money matters amongst the youngsters.
Parents now have access to a site moneynighttalk.com where they can take time out to devote it to their family in terms of training the teens and the young adults about how they can better manage their financial resources. The site offers exclusive videos and FAQ’s on the issue to help families better themselves with the ‘moneytalk’ and the talk points from Jean, offer to address problems like what to cover and how and where to start the discussion. The content of the website is being also promoted by the Council for Economic Education.
The content of the discussions have been differentiated on the basis of various age groups and so parents can conveniently choose what best strategy to follow so as to go about getting guidance over the issue. The three different tracks based on age are: middle school, high school and college – so parents can now get access to the financial experts’ views before and on Money Night.
The idea behind Money Night generated from a survey which was carried out by joint efforts of both the American Express and Jean Chatzky in which they interviewed a representative sample consisting of parents, teens and young adults to show that families are now more than ever, having the money talk and creating awareness among their kids about the importance of investments and savings, but are still searching for tools and equipments to make their discussions more impactful. According to the survey, almost nine out of ten parents and about 79% of the kids were already into a discussion about financial responsibility with each other; however every six out of ten parents (62%) thought that they still needed better means and ways to educate their kids about the importance of money and disadvantages of overspending.
